Walking as Learning to See was a participatory workshop held at the Malmö University, Malmö Sweden, 23-30 October 2015. Professor Roberley Bell of Rochester Institute of Technology and professor Sabina Jallow of Malmö University worked with third year architecture students at Malmö University. The premise of the week-long workshop was to use the act of walking to introduce students to the critical skill of keen observation and methods for recording field research. The initial exercise, Walking Forward Walking Back Again served as the means by which students became familiar with the unfamiliar city of Malmö. The final project, In Between Spaces, asked participants to seek out the left over, loose spaces of the built environment that could be brought back into the fold of the urban landscape through temporary or sustained intervention. The initial walk provided students with a mechanism for seeking out these spaces.
